Bridgets Jones’s Baby Film Review

11/11/2019 by MadWash

Bridget Jones is back. After the hugely successful Bridget Jones’s Diary, the follow up – Bridget Jones; Edge of Reason suffered the curse of most comedy sequels.

I’ve always loved Bridget Jone’s appartment, the quirky flat full of colour, cosy cushions, slightly mismatched chairs and books everywhere. I always wanted to have the storage shelf she used for her plants, books and other pretty decorations.

The film was generally reckoned to be only on the edge of comedy at best. So after a twelve year break, dear Bridge is older but is she any wiser or funnier?

Fortunately, the answer is not really and resolutely every now and then.  As a character Bridget (Renee Zellweger) is definitely lovable but for whom? We warm to her all too familiar neurosis and quirky mannerisms but who will warm her heart and lead her to the promised land of holy matrimony?  Will it be the cool, repressed reserve of old flame Mark Darcy (Colin Firth)? If Bridget still holds a torch for him, it must be down to its dying embers by now.

She first meets up with Mr Darcy again at the funeral service for the missing presumed dead (Hugh Grant). From then on in, it’s a bumpy ride as she bumps into him more times than a trip to the dodgems. Love’s merry go round gets decidedly more messy (literally)  when she encounters charming American millionaire Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey) at Glastonbury.

The carousel of confusion is complete when she sleeps with both in quick succession and soon there’s a bump not even she can hide for long. Hardly surprising when you consider how accident prone Bridget is, but cue for chaos, jealousy, and laughter in equal measure as the love rivals compete with each other and their own emotions, for her favour.

It would have been perhaps more interesting and less cosily middle class, to have more of a contrast between the two suitors. How about a black lover? Or was that too risky and truly beyond the edge of reason for the real producers? Now that would have really given her social conscious mother (Gemma Jones) something to get uptight about, in the middle of her election campaign to be a parish councillor. And why does it always have to snow when Bridget visits her parents for Christmas?

Although Sally Phillips is back as Shazza, Bridget’s best mate, by now married and with kids, for me, the stand out role is played by another British actress, Sarah Solemani. Remember her from TV comedy Him and Her with Russell Tovey? As the news presenter Miranda, to Bridget Jones’ producer, she oozes class, professionalism and sexy poise, together with mischievous sense of adventure which all too soon leads Bridget astray.

Indeed some of the best scenes involve the interplay between the two as in when Solemi is being fed duff lines to repeat to startled guests due to Bridget’s continual mix ups and mis haps in the production box.

Another British favourite Emma Thompson excels as the taciturn Doctor whose consulting rooms become the theatre of farce as the plot finally gives birth to the identity of the real father. Let’s face it, with so many twists and turns, it was hardly likely to be a peaceful pregnancy, now was it? What’s the fun in that?

When reviewing a film, it’s always worth trying to take step back and note which particular scenes the audience laugh at the most. The extended sequence leading up to Bridget’s waters breaking and both Frith and then Dempsey trying to get her to hospital, via a three wheel Italian delivery van and then each carrying her and shoving her through the hospital’s revolving doors, elicited a continuous roar of mirth for several minutes.

All in all, it may be largely familiar, predictable comedy territory, but the seeds of laughter are sown thick on the ground for all to see. Bridget Jones is left holding the baby with a loving father, whoever he might be.

We leave entertained, although not at the prospect that there might be a further follow up in the future. Let’s leave Bridget to her happiness, for once! What excites me more, is the prospect that after her performance here, sassy, Sarah Solemani might be up for a leading lady role. Producers more savvy than Bridget Jones, please take note…

How to Remove Nut HydroBoost Brake Booster GM Chevy Suburban Tahoe Silverado

19/10/2019 by MadWash

After getting a $1000.00+plus quote for replacing a leaking brake booster on my 2005 Chevrolet Suburban, I decided to tackle the job myself. I was on a mission to save my hard earned money.

For the most part, it was a straight forward job. Remove a clip, some bolts and hoses here and there.

However, I wasn’t prepared for how difficult it was to remove that damn nut behind the mounting plate that holds the hydroboost in place. It was tough!

After miserably failing with a variety of plumbing wrenches and other tools, I came close to tossing the brake booster through the windshield.

But after some brainstorming and the help of my father-in-law, we came up with two things that worked.

Method #1: Use Your Tow Hitch

We realized that the tow hitch to my Suburban was almost the same diameter as the nut. By taping a piece of angle-iron inside the hitch we were able to insert and rotate the booster. However, this is a two-person job. I held the brake booster and my father-in-law used a torque-pipe to rotate and loosen the nut.

Method #2: Build a Nut Socket

This method of course depends on whether you have access to a welding machine or know of someone who does.

Using the nut from the new brake booster, we duct-taped pieces of angle-iron tightly around the new nut. Then tack welded to hold in place and removed the nut. After the nut was removed I strengthened the angle-iron with more beads.

Note: By using angle-iron with holes, it makes it easier grip the torque tool used. In our case we used a heavy-duty screw driver to tighten down the new mounting nut in place.

The fascinating history of black rice

22/09/2019 by MadWash

Why Black Rice was “Forbidden” to Poor Peasants

Black rice is a staple food of many cultures, especially in many parts of Asia. It was very popular and desired in ancient China, as it was attainable only by nobility and consumption was banned to the poor. “Forbidden Rice”, as it is also known today or as Emperor’s rice, was reserved for the Emperor in ancient China and used as a tribute food.

Black rice is widely used by chefs of world cuisine, especially in Asia, to adorn and decorate their dishes such as sushi, noodles, and desserts. Black rice has nutty aroma, it has a wrinkled texture and when cooked acquires a purple hue that makes it very attractive and simultaneously adds an extravagant touch.

In addition to its uses in the culinary arts, black rice has been discovered to have antioxidant properties which helps control blood cholesterol levels and fight heart disease – this, of course is what the nobles of Asia already knew.

The Health Benefits of Black Rice

Black rice has a rich-source of anthocyanin antioxidants (pigment color of many fruits and dark vegetables such as eggplant, beets, grapes and blueberries, a substance that helps fight against cancer, heart disease and a myriad of other human diseases.

According to Zhimin Xu, Associate Professor at the Department of Food Science at Louisiana State University Agricultural Center: “Just a spoonful of black rice bran contains more health promoting anthocyanin antioxidants than are found in a spoonful of blueberries, but with less sugar and more fiber and vitamin E antioxidants.”

Nutritional Value of Rice Black. It Contains:
Protein
Carbohydrates
Vitamins B and E
Minerals include: Calcium, Selenium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, Copper

How to Cook Forbidden Rice

1.) Take two cups of black rice in a colander and rinse with cold water. Then pour the black rice to a medium saucepan and cover with cold water and let soak overnight.

2.) Drain the water and add four and half cups of water and a teaspoon of salt.

3.) Bring the rice to a boil over high heat. Cover the pan with a fitted lid and reduce to a simmer.

4.) Simmer for 20 minutes and then check the texture. It should be soft but consistent. If the rice is too hard, cover with lid cook 5 to 10 minutes until soft.

5.) Stir the rice with a fork and serve.

What to do if vaping gives you flu like symptoms

20/09/2019 by MadWash

Quitting smoking/cigarettes is hard enough. Especially when you’ve been addicted nicotine for many years. Electronic cigs have been the bridge for many ex-smokers to a cigarette-free life.

Electronic cigarettes do have substantially fewer chemicals than traditional analogue cigarettes. But e-cigs are not 100% safe. However, if you’ve experienced flu-like symptoms when vaping, there could be reasons why.

The Symptoms:

  • Muscle or body aches
  • Fatigue (tiredness) Sleepiness or Dizziness
  • Sore throat
  • Feeling feverish or have chills (shaking)
  • Cough
  • Sore or stiff neck
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • HeadachesVaping constantly can induce flu-symptoms. Especially if you sit by your computer all day and find yourself in the habit of constantly vaping without thinking about it.

Potential Reasons Why You’re Feeling Sick:

A too high percentage of nicotine intake. Too much nicotine in your system can make you feel sick. Stop completely, cut down on vaping or dilute your e-juice with glycerin by 50 percent.

Your atomizer is burnt-out. In this case, stop vaping and replace your e-cig with a new atomizer. Burnt atomizers/wicks can produce chemicals that can make you feel sick.

It’s important to note that these may not be the only reasons for feeling sick when vaping.

If you continue to feel worse, call your doctor and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

How to change camera language from Chinese to English on SJ6000 Sport HD DV WiFi

Change Camera Language from Chinese to English SJ6000 Sport HD DV WiFi

Getting a new gadget is exciting. But it can quickly become unpleasant if you are having problems operating it.

This article focuses on the language settings for the SJ6000 WiFi Version 2″ LCD Display 170 Degree Wide Angle H.264 12.0MP 1080P HD 30M Waterproof Outdoor Helmet Sport DV Digital Video Camera. This is the fake, replica or knock-off to the SJCAM. (Note this is not the SJ4000 or GoPro model.)

This Action Cam may be sold under different brand names: Megadream, SunKni, Findway, ABLEGRID, RioRand, LELEC, Puluz and VMATE to name a few.

The WiFi Sports Cam we received was set to Chinese language and it was painfully difficult to know exactly where the language settings were. The instruction manual that came in the box was no help to us either.

Hopefully with the picture and help below, you’ll be able to change the language on the SJ6000 Sports HD DV WiFi camera from Chinese to English.

Once the camera has been turned on, press the button on the front of the camera to find the settings page. Then use the buttons on the side of the camera to move up or down. Continue this until you see the wrench symbol highlighted in yellow. Now scroll until you reach the 2/5 page. The button in the middle is your language settings page, click OK button on top of the camera. (Note the bottom button on page 2/5 may read as PAL or NTSC)

Once on the language settings page navigate to English (highlight in yellow) and PRESS the OK button on top of camera.

This should set the camera from Chinese to English.
